LogoA Whole New World

by Martin Docherty & Dougie McLellan

A Whole New World is an ideal show for both Secondary Schools and young amateur theatre companies. It contains a wide range of musical numbers from stand alone pop ballads through to entertaining character songs and the more gentle musical motifs which pop up throughout to comment on or advance the action.

Synopsis

The musical tells the tale of Jenny, a young woman whose life revolves around maintaining house & home for her husband Steve, until one fateful night when she is persuaded to go on a night out with the girls at the local Karaoke. Jenny turns out to be a talented singer and is spotted by local musician, Danny Roberts. The two form a band but Jenny decides to keep this secret from Steve, who she knows would not approve. Jenny’s singing career goes from strength to strength while her marriage begins to crumble. However, after some misunderstandings and a merry dash to the bright lights of London, Jenny gets both her man and a blossoming career.

Cast Of Characters

  • The Narrator A kind of ghostly character, occasionally interacting with the rest of the cast. He/She acts as storyteller, conscience and acquaintance throughout the play
  • Jenny Mariani A rather shy girl, feels a little trapped in her life. Married to Steve. She turns out to be a great singer but until now didn’t realize she could sing.
  • Steve Mariani Typical working class man. Not a bad chap but not the smartest. He likes his life as it is, with Jenny keeping the house running and him either working or at the Pub.
  • Kathy McDonald - Jenny’s pal. A formidable woman, she doesn’t take any snash from anybody. Slightly domineering in her circle of friends, but in a motherly way.
  • Danny Roberts A songwriting musician, he is on the hunt for a new singer & thinks he has found what he is looking for in Jenny. An outrageously camp personality.
  • Findlay Craven A rather eccentric chap. He is a well known A & R / Manager for a record company. He has a peculiar habit of repeating what he has just said.
  • Suzie Graham A bit tarty, she is also one of Jenny’s pals. She is more interested in he latest acquisition.
  • Donna Richmond A rather timid girl, another of Jenny’s circle of friends.
  • Fran Greene A stereotypically dizzy girl from South East England. PA to Findley.
  • Chico Lead singer of the once famous band. Rather smooth character. Preferably male.
  • Rico Backing singer in the band.
  • Zico Backing singer in the band.
